Freedom hero Koitalel immortalised PDF Print E-mail

By Titus Too

What started off as a railway rebellion immortalised this man.

Nandi Orkoiyot Koitalel arap Samoei led a rebellion against the British colonialist and to attest to his seven-year torment of the colonialist, his history has remained in libraries across the world and on the lips of many.

It was during Centenary celebrations in 2005 to mark his killing that the Government announced it would honour him by constructing a multi-million shillings mausoleum in Nandi Hills.

Four years down the line, President Kibaki’s directive has materialised into Sh58-million magnificent mausoleum that is bound to become a landmark in the North Rift.

Even as the contractors make the finishing touches to the arch-shaped facility, the Nandi have made their contributions to enrich it with important artefacts and other traditional domestic tools.

Among the attractions at the magnificent mausoleum, which stands under a cool canopy of two baobab trees believed to have sprung up on the spot where he was killed, are Koitalel’s leadership batons. The batons were recently returned to the country from a museum in Britain.

Elders led by those from Koitalel’s lineage, however, say the mausoleum will not be complete without the return of the legend’s head believed to be in a museum in Britain.

Course of studies

Consumer Affairs

Degree

Master

Description of course of studies

Consumer Affairs is a world-wide rising field in research and higher education. It analyses consumers in their economic, social and ecological environment. The demand from corporate and governmental sectors as well as consumer organisations for higher education graduates in this field is very high. Following the idea to improve the supply of highly educated and qualified employees in the field of Consumer Affairs, Aarhus University (Denmark), the Technische Universität München (Germany), Wageningen University (Netherlands) and the Warsaw University of Life Science (Poland) have established a consortium with the aim of offering the European Master’s Programme in Consumer Affairs (EURECA). Beside the basics of Consumer Affairs (30 ECTS), students are required to choose two out of the following seven specialisations. The specialisations “Consumer, Technology and Innovation” and “Sustainable Consumption” are offered by the Technische Universität München:

Consumer, Technology and Innovation (Munich)
This specialisation deals with the consumer in context of the development of technologies, products and services within markets and inside companies. What is driving innovations and what role plays the consumer? It is also important to look at economic and legal aspects related to this topic.

Sustainable Consumption (Munich)
Water, energy and food are limited commodities. For this reason careful utilisation of them is indispensable for humanity. In the last years the topic of sustainability has become increasingly important. Everybody is directly involved by consuming daily goods and services . This specialisation deals on the one hand with topics about consumer and health behaviour and on the other hand with the impact of companies and governments with regard to the concept of sustainable consumption. In this context, students should deal with the topics of sustainable consumption and marketing. The Partner Universities offer the following specialisations:
  • Consumer Affairs Management (Aarhus)
  • Consumer Studies (Wageningen)
  • Food Policy and Management (Warsaw)
  • Marketing (Aarhus)
  • Marketing Management (Wageningen)

Marking 103rd anniversary of Koitalel arap Samoei’s murder at the Nandi Bears Club. Photo/RUPI MANGAT Nandi Hills in Western Kenya is one of the most beautiful and fertile areas in the country, the proverbial land of milk and mursik (Nandi for sour milk).

Yet in 1905, a gruesome killing of one of Nandi’s strongest leaders Koitalel Arap Samoei took place here.

It was on October 19, 1905, on the grounds of what is now Nandi Bears Club that Koitalel was asked to meet the infamous Englishman, Col Richard Meinertzhagen for a truce. Instead, Meinertzhagen killed Koitalel and his entourage in cold blood.

Sadly, not much is available to the public about the legendary Nandi leader; Wikipedia describes Koitalel as a local witchdoctor.
